Confession time: we don’t take our children out for meals very often. Unless forced to, such as when hungry on holiday and invariably washed down with a glass or two of tolerance juice.
So we were chuffed to bits to find a relaxed restaurant that had so much for the boys – aged 7 and 5 – to look at that we managed to stay there for two whole hours without the normal rowdy behaviour. Second tick for good Thai food; third tick – bring your own (bottle); fourth tick – amazing value – £56 for four of us.
Set in a quiet road off Fulham Broadway, Poppy’s is a bustling little restaurant – make sure you book, especially for dinner. We visited Poppy’s 2 in Greyhound Road, Hammersmith W6 8NX which for us was a short bus ride then a nice walk along the river to both burn off energy and work up an appetite. There’s also a branch, just known as Poppy’s, on Glenthorne Road in Hammersmith, which is north west of the tube station.
One potential drawback may be the quirky décor. It’s taxidermy galore which – as a squeamish vegetarian – I was a bit reticent about following a friend’s recommendation for this restaurant. However, it’s tastefully done, considering, and our main goal was to have a relaxed meal out, which meant finding somewhere to keep the small people sitting still for longer than usual. Regular trips to the small back garden equipped with fishpond excepted!
Most dishes are between £5 and £6.50 and the portions are generous: our bill included the obligatory platter of prawn crackers, 4 starters, 3 main courses with a portion of rice and a portion of noodles and 2 puddings. I didn’t spot anything particularly unusual on the menu but the food was decent. We think but are not sure – as it was not obvious from the bill – that corkage was £5.50.
Only one food photo I’m afraid – I only remembered to take a couple of not great ones at the start of our meal before my phone died – but I thought the unique, albeit divisive, décor was far more eye-catching!
